All countries
Rules change and some offices only accept photos taken on site, so always check the issuing authority before you print. Sizes are width × height of the printed photo. Face height is measured from chin to crown unless the source says otherwise.

What size is a passport photo?
It depends on the country. 35 × 45 mm (1.38 × 1.77 in) is the most common size, used for example by the UK, Australia, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, India and most of the EU. The US uses 2 × 2 in (51 × 51 mm), Canada 50 × 70 mm, China 33 × 48 mm and Hong Kong 40 × 50 mm. The table above shows each country with its official source; check the issuing authority before printing.
How big should the face be in a passport photo?
Most authorities set the head height, chin to crown, at about 32–36 mm on a 35 × 45 mm photo, roughly 70–80% of the height. The UK asks for 29–34 mm, the US for 1 to 1⅜ in (25–35 mm), Canada for 31–36 mm and the Netherlands for 26–30 mm. Countries measure slightly differently (to the crown or to the hairline), so follow the rule of the country you apply to.
Can I print passport photos at home?
Many authorities accept a home print if it is on proper photo paper, at the exact size and meets the quality rules; some only accept photos taken at the office or by a photographer, so check first. What background colour does a passport photo need?
It differs: white or off-white for the US, white for Japan, South Korea and Italy, cream or light grey for the UK, light blue or light grey for France (white is not allowed there) and light grey for Greece. Many countries only say plain, light and without shadows. The Background column shows what each authority publishes.
