To play offline 2 player chess, you need an app that offers pass and play on one device and does not need a connection. In VSPocket, choose Chess, pick two players, and hand the phone back and forth after each move. No Wi-Fi, no mobile data and no sign-in are involved. If nobody is around, the same screen plays against an AI at five levels, also fully offline.
We are the team that builds VSPocket, so this is a practical walk-through of what offline chess looks like in our app, where it helps, and where it does not.
Pass and play on one phone, play the AI at five levels, or open an online room with friends. Free, for iPhone and Android.
Two ways to play chess offline
Two players, one phone. This is pass and play. The board is shared, each of you moves in turn, and you pass the phone across the table, the plane tray or the sofa. Because chess has no hidden information, nothing needs to be covered or handed off secretly, so it is exactly like sitting at a physical board.
You versus the AI. Choose the computer instead of a second player and pick a strength from one star to five. The AI replies within about three seconds and works without any connection, so it holds up in a subway tunnel or at 35,000 feet. Start on a low star level to learn, then climb.
Online play is a separate mode, with a room code and a sign-in. If you want to play a friend who is far away, see our guide to playing games with friends online.
Free for iPhone and Android. Only online rooms need a sign-in.
What the chess in the app actually implements
A lot of casual chess apps skip the awkward rules. We did not, because a beginner who gets stalemate wrong learns the wrong game.
- Castling, en passant and promotion are all implemented, and promotion offers four pieces.
- Checkmate and stalemate are detected for you.
- Draws end the game automatically by threefold repetition, the fifty-move rule or insufficient material.
- Built-in rules guide for chess, so a newcomer can look up how the knight moves without leaving the app.
- Resume a match you left off, which matters on a trip when you are interrupted.
If you want the rules written out in order, we have a separate chess rules guide for beginners.
When offline chess on one phone is the right choice
It fits best in places where a connection is unreliable or a second device is awkward: a flight, a train in a tunnel, a waiting room, a camping trip. It also fits when one person owns the phone and the other does not have the app. Nobody has to install anything on the second player's side.
It fits less well if you want rated games against strangers or a tournament ladder. VSPocket is built for people who know each other, and we would rather say so than let you find out mid-flight.
Free on iPhone and Android. Send a code and your friend joins your board.
