If all you have is phones, the fastest way to play with friends is a game app with rooms: one person creates a room, the app shows a 6-character code, you paste that code into whatever chat you are already in, and everyone joins the same board. No board, no deck of cards, no dice, no extra account for the people who just want to play the game. We build VSPocket this way, and this article walks through exactly how it works and which games are worth the trouble.
Two honest notes first. Your friends need the app too (it is free on iPhone and Android), and only the online rooms ask for a sign-in (Apple or Google). Playing the AI and passing one phone back and forth need no sign-in at all. If you were really asking about talk-only games with nothing on a screen, such as 20 Questions, that is a different list; this one is for games with a board and a winner.
Pass and play on one phone, play the AI at five levels, or open an online room with friends. Free, for iPhone and Android.
How a room works, step by step
Open the app, choose Online, then Create a room. The app shows a six-character room code. Send it by text, WhatsApp, Discord, iMessage, or whatever chat the group already has open. If your friend is sitting next to you, a QR invite does the same job. They tap to join, type the code, and you are on the same board.
A room holds 2 to 6 people, and if you are short of players the host can add an AI to fill a seat, so a four-seat card game never stalls because one friend is late. When a match ends you go back to the room and start another, and the room keeps a running scoreboard. Mid-game you can resign if the position is hopeless. The sign-in is only for this online part.
We designed rooms around people who already know each other, not around matching you with strangers. That is why the code is short enough to read out loud or paste anywhere, and why there is no ranking ladder to climb.
Two-player games that work well over chat
These are the games we would pick when two friends are in different places. Every one of them can be played in a room, and every one has a built-in rules guide, so the friend who has never played Hex is not stuck.
| Game | Why it suits a quick online match |
|---|---|
| Chess | The classic. Full rules built in (castling, en passant, promotion), and you can start a rematch from the room. |
| Checkers | Plays by American rules on an 8×8 board. A match is short enough for a lunch break. |
| Reversi | Easy to explain in one sentence, and the lead keeps swinging until the last move. |
| Connect Four | The one to teach a non-gamer friend. Ninety seconds to learn. |
| Gomoku | Five in a row on an 11×11 board. Pure reading, no luck. |
| Mancala | A seed-sowing game that most people have not played since childhood, which keeps the match even. |
| Hex | Connect your two sides of a hexagonal board. A deep game with almost nothing to memorize. |
| Tic-Tac-Toe (fading marks) | The variant where old marks disappear turns a children's game into a real contest. |
| Bulls and Cows | A number-guessing duel for two, good when you want something lighter than chess. |
One game worth a separate mention is Air Hockey, which is real time rather than turn-based. It is the one to try when your friends are bored of thinking.
Free for iPhone and Android. Only online rooms need a sign-in.
Three or more friends: cards, dice and mahjong
For a group chat rather than a pair, rooms take up to six. Daifugo, Sevens, Old Maid and Texas Hold'em poker work with several friends, and an AI fills any empty seat. Riichi mahjong takes three or four seats. These card games hide each player's hand, so they are played in an online room or against the AI, not by passing a single phone.
When you are on the same couch after all
The same app does not need the internet when you are together. Pass and play hands one phone back and forth for every game that does not hide a hand, which is everything above except Daifugo, Sevens, Old Maid, poker and mahjong. If nobody is around, five difficulty levels of AI answer within about three seconds and work offline. If you mostly play together, our two-player games for waiting piece goes deeper on that side.
Free on iPhone and Android. Send a code and your friend joins your board.
Frequently asked questions
Can I play games with friends online for free?
Yes. In VSPocket every game, the AI and the online rooms are free, with no purchases and no usage limits. Online rooms need a sign-in with Apple or Google; nothing else does.
Do my friends need to install the app?
Yes. Everyone in the room needs VSPocket on their own phone, free on iPhone and Android. The host sends a 6-character code, or a QR invite if you are in the same place, and they join with it.
What can we play with nothing but our phones?
All 18 games in the app: chess, checkers, reversi, Connect Four, gomoku, mancala, hex, tic-tac-toe, Bulls and Cows, air hockey, memory, Yacht, Sevens, Old Maid, Daifugo, poker and Riichi mahjong. No board, cards or dice are needed.
What if we have an odd number of people?
A room holds 2 to 6 players and the host can add an AI to fill a seat, so card games for three or four do not wait on a missing friend.
