Formulas and worked examples

Dividend yield compares one year of dividends with the price you look at: today's share price gives the current yield, and your purchase price gives the yield on cost.

Item Formula Example
Dividend yield (%) annual dividend per share ÷ share price × 100 2 ÷ 50 × 100 = 4%
Annual dividend from shares shares × annual dividend per share 200 × 2 = 400
After tax annual dividend × (1 − tax rate) 400 × (1 − 20%) = 320
Annual dividend from an amount invested amount × yield ÷ 100 10,000 × 3.5 ÷ 100 = 350

Example: 200 shares paying 2 per share a year at a price of 50, a 20% tax rate, and a separate 10,000 invested at 3.5%.

FAQ

How is dividend yield calculated?

Divide the total dividend per share for a year by the share price and multiply by 100. A share paying 0.50 every quarter pays 2 a year, and at a price of 50 the yield is 2 ÷ 50 × 100 = 4%. Use the price today for the current yield, or the price you paid for the yield on cost.

How do I calculate annual dividend income?

Multiply the number of shares by the annual dividend per share: 200 shares paying 2 per share a year give 400 a year, about 33 a month. If you only know the yield, multiply the invested amount by the yield: 10,000 at 3.5% gives 350 a year.

Does the calculator take tax into account?

Only if you enter a tax rate. It is 0 by default, so the first figures are before tax. Withholding and tax on dividends differ by country, by account type and sometimes by where the company is based, so enter the rate that applies to you; the after-tax amount is the pre-tax amount times (1 − rate).

What is the difference between current yield and yield on cost?

Current yield uses today's share price, so it moves whenever the price moves. Yield on cost uses your average purchase price, so it shows the income you earn on what you actually paid, and it rises if the dividend grows. Enter your average cost as the share price to get the yield on cost.
