How to Make Acrylic Charms: Print Your Art at the Right Size

The Perfect Print Team · June 18, 2026 · 6 min read

We're the Perfect Print team. When people make an acrylic charm or keychain, the thing they trip on most is the artwork's size. "It came out smaller than I pictured." "I thought I matched the manufacturer's template, but the printed size was off." These come from not locking the art to a real size in inches. This article shows how to prepare your charm art at actual size and avoid getting the scale wrong.

Work backward from the finished size

First decide how big the finished charm should be. A palm-size piece is usually about 2 to 2.5 inches on the long edge; a smaller charm runs about 1.2 to 1.6 inches. If you're ordering from a goods manufacturer, match the actual size on their submission template. If you're making it yourself with shrink plastic, resin, or a kit, work backward from the size of the base it mounts to.

The common mistake is judging size by what's on screen. Your phone screen doesn't show real size, so the surest move is to print it once on paper at actual size and see how it really looks at, say, 2 inches. We built Perfect Print so that "check it at real size" can happen entirely on your phone.

Why on-screen sizing changes when you print

Scaling the art in a photo editor only changes pixels on screen — it doesn't set the printed size. Print with "fit to page" at home or a store and it auto-scales off your real size. "I laid it over the template and the size didn't match" almost always happens at this step. What you need is to lock the art to a real measurement, like a 2-inch long edge, and print it there.

How to make an actual-size test print in Perfect Print

Pick a paper size (a letter sheet) and load the charm art. Enter the art's width and height in inches to place it at real size, matched to your finished size or the manufacturer's template. Millimeter precision means fine tweaks like a 2.2-inch long edge are easy. Lay a few size options (2 in, 2.4 in) on one sheet to compare real sizes side by side.

Save and print with the setting on actual size (100%) so it comes out at the size you set. Hold the printed paper against a keyring or your bag to picture how it'll actually hang. As a final check before sending art to a manufacturer, this actual-size preview is hard to beat. The same approach works for buttons, fans, and other fan goods.

Frequently asked questions

What size should I make the charm art?

Work from the finished size. Palm-size is about 2 to 2.5 inches on the long edge; a small charm is about 1.2 to 1.6 inches. If you're ordering, match the manufacturer's submission template.

My print doesn't match the template size.

A screen crop doesn't fix real size, and the print setting scales it. Set the art to a real "long edge = X inches" in Perfect Print and print at 100% to line up with the template.

Can I check the size before it's made?

Yes. Print your candidate sizes at actual size and hold them against a keyring or bag to picture the look and feel. Laying several sizes on one sheet makes comparing easy.

Does this work for other goods too?

Yes — buttons, fan signs, trading cards, and any custom goods with a set size use the same method. Checking the art at real size first cuts down on sizing mistakes.
