What is Shogi?

Shogi, often called "Japanese Chess," is a strategic board game that has been played in Japan for centuries. Like Chess, it's a two-player game where the goal is to checkmate your opponent's King. However, Shogi has a unique twist that makes it incredibly dynamic: captured pieces can be returned to the board as your own!

🎮 If you just want to start playing immediately:

  2. Take turns moving one piece at a time
  3. Capture opponent pieces by moving to their square
  4. Drop captured pieces on any empty square (on your turn)

The Pieces and How They Move

Each piece has unique movement patterns. The diagrams below show where each piece can move (● = can move here).

King (王/王将 - Ō/Ōshō) - The Most Important Piece

King can move one square in any direction (like Chess King)

Movement: One square in any direction (like Chess King)

Promotion: Cannot promote

⚠️ Protect at all costs - losing the King means losing the game!

Gold General (金将 - Kinshō) - The Reliable Defender

Movement: One square orthogonally or diagonally forward (NOT diagonally backward)

Promotion: Cannot promote

💡 Remember: Gold can't move diagonally backward!

Silver General (銀将 - Ginshō) - The Versatile Attacker

Movement: One square diagonally or forward (NOT sideways or straight back)

Promotion: Becomes "Promoted Silver" (成銀) - moves like Gold

💡 Silver promotes to move like Gold!

Knight (桂馬 - Keima) - The Jumper

Movement: Jumps two squares forward and one to the side (L-shape)

Special: Only piece that can jump over others!

Promotion: Becomes "Promoted Knight" (成桂) - moves like Gold

⚡ Can jump over other pieces!

Lance (香車 - Kyōsha) - The Spear

⬆️

Movement: Any number of squares forward (like a Rook, but only forward)

Promotion: Becomes "Promoted Lance" (成香) - moves like Gold

📍 Can only move forward - no retreat!

Pawn (歩兵 - Fuhyō) - The Foot Soldier

Movement: One square forward only

Promotion: Becomes "Tokin" (と金) - moves like Gold!

💎 Humble pawn becomes powerful when promoted!

Bishop (角行 - Kakugyō) - The Diagonal Master

↘️

Movement: Any number of squares diagonally

Promotion: Becomes "Horse" (馬) - Bishop + one square orthogonally

🐴 Promoted Bishop (Horse) = Bishop + King's orthogonal moves!

Rook (飛車 - Hisha) - The Chariot

⬆️

Movement: Any number of squares horizontally or vertically

Promotion: Becomes "Dragon" (龍) - Rook + one square diagonally

🐉 Promoted Rook (Dragon) = Rook + King's diagonal moves!

Unique Shogi Rules

1. Capturing and Dropping Pieces (The Game Changer!)

🎯 This is what makes Shogi special!

  • Capture: When you capture an opponent's piece, it becomes yours!
  • Drop: On your turn, instead of moving, you can place a captured piece on any empty square
  • Important: Dropped pieces always enter as unpromoted (even if they were promoted when captured)

2. Promotion Rules

The promotion zone consists of the furthest three ranks from each player:

Opponent's promotion zone
(Your pieces promote here: ranks a, b, c)
Middle board (ranks d, e, f)
Your promotion zone
(Opponent's pieces promote here: ranks g, h, i)

Promotion Rules:

  • Optional promotion: When a piece moves into, out of, or within the promotion zone
  • ⚠️ Forced promotion: When a piece would have no legal moves if not promoted (Pawn/Lance reaching the last rank, Knight reaching last 2 ranks)
  • 🚫 Cannot promote: King and Gold General never promote

How Promoted Pieces Move

Minor Pieces → All Move Like Gold When Promoted

When promoted, Silver, Knight, Lance, and Pawn ALL move exactly like a Gold General:

Major Pieces → Enhanced Movement When Promoted

💡 Promotion Strategy Tips:

  • Always promote Pawns when possible - Tokin (と金) is almost as valuable as Gold!
  • Promoted major pieces are extremely powerful - Horse and Dragon dominate the board
  • 🎯 Minor pieces become more defensive - Great for protecting your King
  • 🏆 Impasse (jishōgi) scoring tip: Promoted pieces count as their original piece values. Dragon (promoted Rook) and Horse (promoted Bishop) are each 5 points, Tokin (promoted Pawn) is 1 point.

3. Drop Restrictions (Important!)

⚠️ Illegal Drops - These will lose you the game:

  • Two Pawns (Nifu - 二歩): You cannot drop a Pawn on a file (column) where you already have an unpromoted Pawn
✓ OK: Drop a Pawn if your other Pawn on that file is promoted (Tokin)
  • Drop Pawn Checkmate: You cannot checkmate by dropping a Pawn
✓ OK: Give check with a dropped Pawn (just not checkmate)
✓ OK: Checkmate by moving a Pawn or dropping any other piece
  • Immobile pieces: Cannot drop pieces where they'd have no legal moves
✗ Pawn/Lance on the last rank
✗ Knight on the last two ranks

Check and Checkmate

Check (王手 - Ōte)

When the King is under attack and could be captured next turn.

You must respond to check by:

  • 1. Moving the King to safety
  • 2. Capturing the attacking piece
  • 3. Blocking with another piece (including drops!)

Checkmate (詰み - Tsumi)

When the King is in check and has no legal way to escape.

This wins the game immediately!

Remember: Unlike Chess, there's no stalemate in Shogi - if you can't move, you lose!

Special Game Endings

Repetition (千日手 - Sennichite)

If the same position occurs 4 times with the same player to move, the game is a draw.

Exception: If those repetitions are caused by perpetual check, the side giving check loses (no draw).

Impasse (持将棋 - Jishōgi)

When both Kings enter the enemy camp and neither can be checkmated:

  • Point counting: Rook/Bishop (incl. Dragon/Horse) = 5 points; other pieces (incl. Tokin) = 1 point
  • What to count: Pieces on the board and in hand; Kings are not counted; promoted pieces count as their originals
  • Win condition: 24 points or more qualifies; if both sides have 24+ → draw

Note: This is extremely rare in actual games!

Common Mistakes to Avoid

❌ Two Pawns (Nifu)

Most common illegal move - dropping a Pawn on a file with your unpromoted Pawn

❌ Drop Pawn Mate

Cannot win by dropping a Pawn for checkmate

⚠️ Forgetting Gold's limits

Gold cannot move diagonally backward - easy to forget!

⚠️ Knight confusion

Knight only jumps forward (not backward like in Chess)
